Rocket attack from Syria hurts six, including five children, in Turkish town: officials

Windows were shattered and dust rose from smashed concrete on a busy shopping street, footage following the attack aired by on CNN Turk showed.

The local governor, Ismail Catakli, said in a statement that six people, five of them children, were wounded in the attack.

All six of the wounded are Syrian nationals, Mayor Hasan Kara told CNN Turk, adding that none of their injuries were life threatening. Kilis is home to a sizeable population of Syrian refugees who fled the civil war into neighboring Turkey.

Police sources said the rocket came from Islamic State-controlled territory inside Syria. Since January of this year such cross-border rocket attacks have killed 21 people and wounded 80 in Kilis, security sources said.

This month Turkish tanks rolled into Syria from Kilis province, as part of Ankara's operation, dubbed "Euphrates Shield" that has helped Turkey-back rebel sweep Islamic State from a 90-km (55 miles) stretch of Turkey's border.

However, the land under control of the rebels is a narrow wedge and Islamic State has a presence further south.
