Karzai Attempts Peace Talks with Insurgent Faction Hizb-i-Islami

The president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai announced he has met with the insurgent group Hizb-i-Islami to negotiate peace. Hizb-i-Islami is led by the former U.S. ally Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and controls land in northeast Afghanistan. These talks come amid reports the U.S. has engaged in talks with the Taliban, according to the Associated Press.
