Turkey should not intervene in Syria: Turkish MP

Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), a major parliamentary group, has warned Ankara against any intervention in Syria, saying such a measure will have grave repercussions for the entire region, according to Press TV. “Turkey should not undertake any kind of intervention in Syria. Turkey should not become a party to the unrest in Syria. Any whimsical moves by Turkey to win a role will lead to an intervention and catastrophe in the region,” Ozcan Yeniceri, an MP from the party, said in a parliamentary session on Thursday. Senior legislators, politicians from various political parties in Turkey and political analysts have also repeatedly voiced their concerns about the disastrous consequences of any intervention in Syria. “When we look at Iraq and Libya we see that international interventions have failed to establish democracy and stability, and have instead led to long-term occupation and insecurity. An intervention in Syria will have the same results,” said Oytun Orhan, a Middle East analyst in an interview with our correspondent. In November 2011, Turkey imposed sanctions against Syria in an effort to increase pressure on the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and has also vowed to take further measures against Syria. Some political analysts believe that the Syrian crisis can be solved through reforms and dialogue. “The major countries of the region should come together to help the democratization process of Syria because if they fail to do so, an international intervention in the country will be put on the agenda,” Veysel Ayhan, a political analyst told a Press TV reporter in Ankara.
